FDIC Piloting Low-Income Accounts

WASHINGTON-The FDIC last week launched a pilot program to test low-cost transaction and deposit accounts aimed at low- and moderate-income consumers.Called the "Model Safe Accounts Pilot," the one-year program calls on banks to submit applications to become one of nine institutions to participate.

NYIB Named Herb Wegner Winner

WASHINGTON-The National CU Foundation has named the first of the 2011 Herb Wegner Memorial Award winners: The National Youth Involvement Board. The NYIB has during the past 38 years have made presentations to more than 2.5 million young people on financial education and credit unions. The award will be presented at the Herb Wegner Awards Dinner on Feb. 28, 2011.

 

Two CU Educators Are Honored

ST. LOUIS-The National Youth Involvement Board has recognized Cynthia Campbell, AVP-financial empowerment with Tinker FCU in Oklahoma as its 2009 Delegate of the Year, and Elda Olvera, financial education supervisor at Randolph-Brooks FCU in Texas, as Outstanding Volunteer of the Year.

 

Ulan Named AGC By NCUA

ALEXANDRIA, Va.-NCUA has named Hattie M. Ulan as Associate General Counsel, Director of Operations within the Office of General Counsel (OGC). She succeeds Sheila Albin, who is retiring at year-end.

 

Mississippi Pioneer, DIll, Dies

JACKSON, Miss.--Rudolph "Rudy" Dill, former president of the Mississippi CU League, has died. Mr. Dill was 97. He began in CUs in 1961 and became league president in 1983, retiring in 1989. During his career he helped to organize 24 credit unions.

 

UK Program To Highlight CUs

LONDON-The United Kingdom's Unity Trust Bank has launched the country's first-ever National CU Awards for Excellence program, which will recognize its first round of honorees in February 2011. The top honor is to be named after U.S. CU pioneer Edward A. Filene. Winners in each category will receive trophies and cash awards.

 

SW Corp Requests S&P Pull Rating

PLANO, Texas-Southwest Corporate FCU has requested that Standard & Poor's (S&P) pull its BBB-/A-3 counterparty credit rating on the corporate. SWCFCU said it made the move to reduce operating expenses, as it does not anticipate needing the rating.

 

AACUC Recognizes Two Leaders

ST. LOUIS-The African-American Credit Union Council honored Eunice Rogers of NRS Community Development FCU in Birmingham, Ala., and Helen Godfrey-Smith of Shreveport FCU in Louisiana with Pete Crear Lifeftime Achievement Awards during the group's annual meeting here.

 

Filene Adds 5 To Council

MADISON, Wis.-The Filene Research Institute has added five CU CEOs to its research council Gerry Agnes of Elevations CU; Mary Madden of Hudson Valley FCU; Lily Newfarmer of Tarrant County CU; Eugene Scymczak of Educators CU, and Launi Skinner of First West CU, Surrey, B.C.

 

New Names Are In Motion

LINDEN, N.J.-- E53 FCU has changed its name to Motion FCU. It wil also use the tagline "Moving dreams forward." In Godfrey, Ill, Olin Community CU is changing its name to 1st MidAmerica CU.

Best Practices On Reaching Hispanics

MADISON, Wis.-Three Iowa CUs shared best practice ideas during a World Council of CUs' webinar titled "Reaching the Hispanic Market through Remittances." CUSO To Offer Compliance Help

WOODBRIDGE, Va.-Belvoir FCU has launched a wholly owned CUSO that will offer regulatory compliance assistance to other credit unions. Called COMPASS 4 CUs, LLC., (Compliance Assistance for Credit Unions), it will be headed by CEO Gaye DeCesare. Analysis will include marketing, website reviews, creating and/or reviewing policies and procedures, pre/post exam areas of concern, and BSA/OFAC and training for staff and volunteers.
