NORFOLK, Va. – A 38-year-old hit-man hired to kill a Navy officer outside a Langley FCU ATM two years ago was sentenced to death last week by a federal jury.
David Runyon, 38, of Morgantown, West Va., was found guilty in July of performing the contract killing of Cory Allen Voss — a 30-year-old and father of two. Runyon had been hired by the dead man’s wife and her lover to kill Voss in order to collect $500,000 in Navy death benefits. Corey Voss, known as Allen, had a $400,000 life insurance policy plus a $100,000 death gratuity through the military.
The couple met while Voss, was on a six-month deployment for the Navy in 2006 and they continued the affair even after the sailor returned, according to court records.
Voss, an ensign on the USS Elrod, was sent to the withdraw money from the ATM by his wife, Catherina Voss. His bullet-riddled body was found slumped over in his pick-up truck the next day in the parking lot next to the credit union.
Surveillance video at the credit union drive-thru showed an assailant, believed to be Runyon, stick his head up in the back seat of the truck as Voss tried unsuccessfully to withdraw cash from the ATM.
Draven met Runyon, a former police a former police officer and former Army soldier, at a medical research study in Baltimore, when they talked about killing Voss, the records show.
Catherina Voss pleaded guilty to her role and is serving life in prison.
Draven will be sentenced in December.
