Illinois League Prohibits Volunteers From Joining Board

NAPERVILLE, Ill. – The Illinois CU League has passed an amendment to its bylaws prohibiting volunteers from serving on its board.

Vicki Ponzo, the league’s VP of member services, told Credit Union Journal last week the board spent several years discussing the move, but ultimately approved it out of a belief that much of the league’s work – in particular the work of its service corporation – is too complex for those not involved in the day-to-day business of running a credit union.

The ICUL has not had any volunteer board members in about four years, said Ponzo, who noted as volunteers have left the board or retired, other volunteers have not stepped up to run for those positions.

The amendment prohibiting volunteers is part of a larger change to the ICUL’s bylaws, much of which pertains to measures approved in 2009 to reduce the size of the league’s board and revise the way directors are elected.
