WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – City officials hope the new Latino Community CU branch, which opened here Monday, will help spur the renewal of the Southeast Ward.

Officials worked with police to clean up the poverty-ridden neighborhood and closed down a bar and a bookie operation before the opening of CDCU’s sixth branch, around which 10 new business are slated to coalesce over the next year.
The credit union, which is housed in a restored Wachovia Bank branch, is one of 11 projects that make up the Waughtown area's revitalization plan. City officials picked the Waughtown area to get $674,000 from the Revitalization of Urban Commercial Areas program. That money has helped businesses ranging from an auto-repair shop to an ice cream and coffee shop.
