MARIETTA, Ga. - (09/13/05) -- Looking to do something beyond cashdonations for victims of Hurricane Katrina, Lockheed GeorgiaEmployees FCU has donated 1,000 prepaid telephone calling cards tothe thousands of refugees from New Orleans, Mississippi and Alabamathat have fled to Atlanta. "We were looking to drum up, not onlymonetary suppor for the Hurricane Katrina relief efforts, buttangible ways to help the people who were displaced form theirhomes," Tricia Szurgot, head of marketing for the $600 millioncredit union, told The Credit Union Journal. The phone cards, eachwith a half hour prepaid on them, will allow refugees, many of whomhave been unable to call home, to phone their loved ones, she said.The credit union also sent two loan officers to the Lockheed Corp.plant it serves in Meridian, Miss., last week to offer immediate$1,000 unsecured loans at 6% interest for any member in goodstanding and is providing free wire transfers for victims of themassive disaster.
