Manager Personifies, 'Live Well, Below Your Means'

SILVER SPRING, Md. — Effective branch managers lead by example, both in their personal and professional lives.

Anibal Garcia, who runs the Silver Spring branch of the Department of Commerce FCU, takes that philosophy to heart. And since the CU's motto is "Live well, below your means," Garcia shares that message not just with members, he makes sure he and his family of five are wise money managers.

"If you really believe in something you have to live it. My family has needs, and we make sure those are met," said Garcia, who has headed the Silver Spring location for three years. "They need money for school, summer camp, and other essentials. We live well, but we are very careful to follow a family budget. In this economy, we know that if we spend without thinking about how we're spending that we'll face repercussions."

Garcia and the Silver Spring staff of three share a message of wise spending with members (Credit Union Journal, Dec. 8, 2008). CEO Evan Clark puts out a message each month on the topic and the credit union works closely with its members to provide financial counseling and tips on money management. "We all work together as a team to emphasize the trademark we promote," Garcia said.

His belief in leading by example produces a "hands-on" style of branch management," Garcia said. "I work side-by-side with my team and I always want to understand the issues they are facing and how they are feeling. I get in and do many of the jobs my staff does every day. I'll work the teller lines when needed. I want my team to know that I understand what they do and that I can relate to their issues. I am also very personable and let my team know I care about them."

Garcia believes his management style helps his employees understand that he expects members to be treated with the same respect he gives his staff. "Everything flows down from the top," he said. "You have to set the right example."

The Silver Spring branch is a short drive from Washington, D.C., where the $200-million credit union has its headquarters. Both offices serve a single sponsor and are located within the Department of Commerce campuses. Garcia's branch is on the ninth floor of a Department of Commerce building, with four teller windows and a large lobby. "It's spacious, and a convenient location to serve members," he said.

Members who frequent the Silver Spring branch have unique professional skills, Garcia acknowledged. "We have scientists, lawyers, biologists, and people who make weather maps. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is part of the Department of Commerce and we serve a large number of their employees at my location."

While the unique skill sets of its members lead to a diverse range of incomes, Garcia said that doesn't change how DOCFCU handles its members. "When you get down to it, everyone at any credit union is unique, no matter what their walk of life. They have their own personal financial situations, and we do our best to listen to what they are and fit members into the right products."
