As profiled in the Jan. 10 issue of The Crdit Union Journal, Kiernan O'Brien, a member of THE Credit Union of Palm Beach County in Florida, made a spur-of-the-moment decision to fly to Thailand and use his construction skills to help communities destroyed by the tsunami. At the time he departed, O'Brien wasn't even sure where he was headed once he arrived in Bangkok.
O'Brien has since made his way to a number of affected areas, and in e-mails to the credit union-whose employees along with those of Gold Coast Credit Union donated clothing-he said, "I can't seem to think or comprehend what I witnessed today. I am sure that most of the Asian people are not all experienced in this sort of disaster..."
