"Years ago I would never have considered pumping my own gas," noted John Panteleon, president of Worldwide Interactive Services. "Now the consumer mindset is that if I can't pump my own gas and pay for it at the pump, I'm going to the next gas station. The financial industry is moving more toward self-service-transfer my own money, make my own payments, and apply for loans online."

With PDAs and smart phones becoming affordable, Panteleon reminded that mobile technology will gain ground quickly. "Mobile banking is going to be the medium of choice in the not-so-distant future," he said. "Credit unions need to make sure they are staying ahead of the curve with consumers who will become members as they get older, and the technology and mediums they use today."

Panteleon said CUs are relying on browser-based approaches to deliver mobile services and downloadable apps. "This is similar to the '90s when financials were not quite ready to adopt Internet banking so they had PC banking. But what happened...is that the financial became tech support."
