NAFCU's political action committee made major strides during the last elections, doubling its campaign contributions to $292,000 and its fundraising to $330,000. Brad Thaler, vice president of government affairs, said NAFCU's board made a concerted effort to expend more of the association's resources to political action in the 2003-2004 elections. The additional funds available allowed NAFCU to do some things it hadn't been able to in the past, including attending the Republican and Democratic conventions and contributing to congressional leadership PACs. Thaler said NAFCU wanted to cite Members 1st FCU of Mechanicsburg, Pa., as winner of its "White Hat" award for the second straight year for raising the most money for NAFCU's PAC, $45,000.
