VIENNA, Va. – Navy FCU next week plans to introduce a new app designed in-house for the iPad tablet, which it hopes will take its mobile banking apps for iPhone and Android “to the next level.”

The iPad app will include an on-screen calculator, quick action transfers, social feeds (Facebook and Twitter), and easier access to Navy Federal’s online banking, according to Meghan Gound, assistant vice president for e-channels at the $56-billion credit union.

Navy Federal estimates as many as 2 million people – almost half its members – use online services, and about half of them – 1 million members – use a mobile channel, mostly iPhone or Android. “Mobile is really important for our members who often get deployed on short notice and are always on the go,” Gound told Credit Union Journal Thursday.

About 23% of the credit union’s mobile users do so on iPad tablets. “It is the only tablet to take a major chunk of the usage,” said Gound, adding, “We believe our iPad app is going to be an important advantage to our members.”

The iPad app was developed by Navy FCU’s own technology staff of 50 to 60 professionals, according to Gound. The staff typically releases four-to-six technology updates per year. The next scheduled update is a major overhaul of the credit union’s online banking system.
