NCUA Board Nominee Withdraws

WASHINGTON-The White House has withdrawn the nomination of Washington credit union manager Carla Leon-Decker to the NCUA Board.

Leon-Decker's nomination to the three-person panel has languished since it was sent to the Senate Banking Committee in October.

Leon-Decker, the president of $48-million D.C. Government Employees FCU, would have succeeded Gigi Hyland, whose six-year-term on the panel expired in August. Hyland has been serving as a so-called holdover since then.

During that time the Senate committee has yet to hold a hearing on the nomination, a sign that the appointment was in trouble.

In a letter to her board of directors, Leon-Decker wrote, "Please be advised that I have requested that my nomination to the National Credit Union Administration Board be withdrawn. That withdrawal request was accepted today. The confirmation process is not only an arduous and protracted one, but the partisan climate in the Senate is such that it will most likely continue to impede confirmations during this election year.

"The withdrawal allows me to fully focus on the business of our credit union and our service to our member-owners."
