NCUA will host a live Twitter chat on Feb. 26 as part of its promotional efforts surrounding Military Saves and America Saves Week.
Credit unions and consumers will have the chance to ask questions regarding savings strategies and share their experiences as part of the Twitter event, the NCUA said in a Feb. 12 press release. Folks interested in learning more about credit unions can follow the NCUA's official consumer Twitter feed, @MyCUgov, and the event's hashtag, #NCUAChat beginning at 11 am ET that day.
The event will feature Kenneth Worthey, financial literacy and outreach analyst with the NCUA's Office of Consumer Protection, as well as staff members from America and Military Saves.
NCUA is hosting this Twitter event for the second time, having run a similar live chat on the social networking platform last year as part of Military Saves and America Saves Week. The agency has also hosted a Twitter forum last April for Financial Literacy Month.
Last year's savings Twitter discussion allowed credit unions and consumers to connect with each other, something the agency hopes will happen again this year, according to NCUA social media and outreach specialist Kenzie Snowden.
"It's not so much about regulators sharing their thoughts," Snowden said. "We're focusing on encouraging credit unions to share best practices and their savings strategies."
Snowden added that the NCUA plans to post content to Twitter during the savings education week, which runs Feb. 23-28, beyond the Twitter chat.
America Saves Week is organized by America Saves and the American Savings Education Council. Military Saves, which sponsors the concurrent Military Saves Week, is part of the Defense Department's Financial Readiness Campaign. Both programs are managed by the Consumer Federation of America with the goal of promoting saving, reducing consumers' debt and building wealth.
