New leadership named at Iowa, Illinois credit unions

E.J. Donaghey has been named president and CEO of Citizens Community Credit Union in Fort Dodge, Iowa, effective Feb. 25.

Donaghey previously served as president and CEO at University of Illinois Community Credit Union, now a $346 million-asset institution based in Champaign, Ill. Before that, he served in executive management positions at Great Lakes Credit Union (Bannockburn, Ill.; $860 million); Baxter Credit Union (Vernon Hills, Ill.; $3.48 billion); and CommunityAmerica Credit Union (Lenexa, Kan., $2.69 billion).

“I am excited to bring my experience and passion for credit unions to build upon Citizens Community Credit Union’s success,” Donaghey said in a statement.

Donaghey holds a Bachelor of Business Administration Degree in Business and Spanish from Elmhurst College, an MBA Degree from Northwestern University.

Citizens Community posted net income of about $1.8 million in 2018, a 17.5 percent increase from the prior year.

No longer interim in Illinois

With Donaghey taking over in Iowa, Chris Harlan has been named president and CEO of University of Illinois Credit Union. He was appointed interim CEO in August 2018 when Donaghey departed.

Harlan has been with the credit union since 2009 and most recently served as EVP and chief operating officer. He holds a Master of Business Administration from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

University of Illinois CU posted net income of about $1.5 million in 2018, a 6.2 percent increase from the prior year.
