ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The New Mexico’s Secretary of State is teaming up with credit unions around the state to register voters.
Starting Monday through the end of August, about 90 credit unions around the state will have registration cards available for people to register to vote or to update their existing voter registration.
The Secretary of State’s office will train and certify credit union workers to help with this push to get people to the polls.
There are no state or federal elections in 2009, but state officials hope to avoid for the next elections last year’s crisis when county clerks around the state were overwhelmed with voter registrations in the final weeks before the races.
State officials plan to register voters in credit union branches in Bernalillo, Cibola, Doña Ana, Luna, McKinley, Torrance, Otero, Rio Arriba, Sandoval, Santa Fe, Socorro and Valencia counties.
