COLUMBUS, Ga. – A rookie police officer shot and killed two suspects in an armed robbery at MEA FCU yesterday morning as they tried to make their getaway.
The officer, a member of this year’s Columbus Police class of recruits, pulled into the credit union parking lot around 11:30 a.m. and saw a masked man leaving the building. When the suspect fled into the neighborhood behind the credit union, the officer left his patrol car and pursued him on foot, police said.
The fleeing suspect ran to a nearby house where a black Chevy pickup sped by and he leapt into the truck, police said. When the officer told them to stop the getaway car and get out they backed it up to try and run him down, at which point he fired several shots into the truck.
One of the suspects was killed at the scene and the other died later at the hospital from gunshot wounds. The officer was not injured.
The shooting is being investigated by the FBI and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
