FAIRFAX, Va. - Thanks to Apple FCU, two high schools here recently added a new competition: attempting to out-save one another.
Students and staff of Stonewall Jackson High School and Osbourn Park High School, both in Manassas, Va., competed in a program organized by Apple FCU that was aimed at improving financial literacy and economic awareness among their students. To do that, both competed in “Feed the Pig,” a school-wide savings competition sponsored by AFCU that sought to see who could add the most deposits via their Apple Student-Run Credit Union (SRCU) branch.
According to the credit union, record deposits from both schools fueled the campaign. Osbourn witnessed an increase of 100% over their SRCU branch’s monthly deposit average, while Stonewall saw a smaller 14% jump. It was Stonewall, however, who ultimately edged out Osbourn for the win. Their accumulation of more than $74,000 in deposits bested Osbourn’s $34,000, earning the school a one-of-a-kind “Feed the Pig” trophy.
Student employees from both schools were tasked with developing a “Feed the Pig” marketing campaign as part of their participation. The overall contest was inspired by a slogan from the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants’ (AICPA) national.
Apple’s sponsorship of “Feed the Pig” included financial education workshops and a prize program that rewarded each school’s biggest student and staff savers for the month of April.
