New York CUs Mourn The Passing Of CU Organizer Al Mariani

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Credit union representatives are mourning the death of Alfred Mariani, who worked as an executive at three credit unions and organized more than 100 credit unions in the northern tier of the state.

Mariani, who passed away Monday at 86, joined the credit union movement in the late 1940s following the end of World War Two. He served as treasurer of both Oneida FCU and Bendix FCU before becoming a field representative for the Syracuse chapter of the CU Association of New York. He later served as president and CEO of Syracuse University FCU.

He also served as CUNA director, a founding member of Empire Corporate FCU (now Members United Corporate FCU) and two-time chairman of the state league.
