SANTA ANA, Calif. - Orange County's Credit Union and its members donated more than $12,500 to sponsor the new Endangered-Species Carrousel at the Santa Ana Zoo in Prentice Park, Calif. The effort was part of a "Community Spirit Project" to honor OCCU's 70th anniversary, with funds raised through the sale of commemorative T-shirts and plush toy otters for donations of $10 or more. Orange County's Credit Union, which also had a zoo-themed decorating contest at its 11 branches, matched dollar-for-dollar up to $5,000. "The $12,500 will be designated for the sea otter and the Hawaiian Monk Seal, which are two of the 33 animals featured on the carrousel," said COO Lynda Savoit. "Both marine animals are endangered species and have a great tie into our kids program here."
The credit union also invited members and their families enjoy free admission on one of four days at the Santa Ana Zoo, along with a free train ride, souvenir photo, monkey face art, and a free picnic lunch.
More than 6,000 members and their guests attended, including a pre-opening day tour of the new Endangered-Species Carrousel which is set to officially open to the public over the Labor Day Weekend.(c) 2008 The Credit Union Journal and SourceMedia, Inc.
