CU Celebrates 09/09/09 With Special 9% CDs
SEWICKLEY, Penn.-PA HealthCare CU held a 'Whole 9 Yards' promotion yesterday for all of nine hours-offering a $999, 99-Day CD at 9% to commemorate the day 09/09/09.
In addition for 9 days, a 12-month CD was available at 2.09%. On the lending side, available is a five-year auto loan for 2009 or newer model years at 3.99%, and a 5-year home equity loan also at 3.99%.
The CU celebrated last Aug. 8-08/08/08-with a 'Crazy 8's' promotion that paid 8% on selected CDs. Almost 10% of the CU's membership pre-ordered the 9% CDs and the credit union also saw a 0.5% increase in new members within a month of announcing the promotion.
Wheelchair-Bound CU Robber Bound For Prison
MERRITT ISLAND, Fla.-A paraplegic who drove his motorized wheelchair into a robbery at a Space Coast CU branch here last November, then hid the stolen cash in his prosthetic leg, was sentenced yesterday to 34 months in jail and barred for life from the credit union's offices.
The state judge refused to grant Christopher Reed leniency, telling the 48-year-old after he pleaded guilty that robbing the CU and threatening to blow it up are both serious offenses.
The paraplegic drove his wheelchair into the credit union and with a black stick and a lighter in his hand he told the teller he wanted $40,000 or he was going to blow the branch up. Reed was caught just down the street, where police found $1,300 of the credit union's cash hidden inside his prosthetic leg. Reed lost the use of both legs in 1986 from a gunshot wound. One of his legs was amputated just five months before the robbery. His attorney argued he was on anti-depressants and pain medication at the time.
