Estimated 650K Have Joined

Credit Unions In Four Weeks

WASHINGTON-As Credit Union Journal was going to press, CUNA reported that an estimated 650,000 consumers had closed their bank accounts and opted for credit union membership over the prior four weeks leading up to Bank Transfer Day.

In a survey of 5,000 of its members CUNA estimates that at least 650,000 consumers across the nation have joined CUs since Sept. 29, the day Bank of America unveiled its now-rescinded $5 monthly debit card fee.

The survey results also show that more than four in every five CUs experiencing member growth since Sept. 29 attributed the growth to consumer reaction to new fees imposed by banks, or a combination of consumer reactions to the new bank fees plus the social media-inspired "Bank Transfer Day," Nov. 5. CUNA said the growth is particularly noticeable at CUs with $100 million or more in assets. The CUNA survey shows that more than 70% of these CUs reported they have seen growth in members and deposits since Sept. 29.

The newly forfeited assets bring to almost $20 million the amount raised from McGrath, who is serving a 14-year prison term for the massive fraud, in which he sold mortgages his company held for 28 credit unions to Fannie Mae without the credit unions' consent or knowledge and used the proceeds to keep his company afloat.
