CUNA Mutual In 4th Round Of Layoffs

MADISON, Wis.-CUNA Mutual Group announced its fourth round of layoffs in five months, with more expected to come. The firm said 55 more jobs will be pared-40 of them in Madison and 15 in Waverly, Iowa-bringing the number of jobs eliminated since last October to 565.

This latest blow was softened by the addition of 43 new positions, making the lay-offs a net loss of 12, but more cuts are expected.

Committee Revisits CUNA Renewal Project

WASHINGTON-A blue-ribbon committee met Friday to revisit the historic CUNA Renewal project to determine what new issues have cropped up in the intervening years.

Among the issues discussed:

* The role of volunteers in CUNA. With a number of credit union volunteers having complained about the lack of a voice for the movements volunteers, the trade association is exploring this issue.

* Corporate membership. Presently, corporates can only join CUNA through the Association of Corporate Credit Unions, which has an associate membership. Because of this indirect affiliation, corporate credit unionists currently cannot run for the board.

* Continued consolidation of credit unions and its impact on "Class C" credit unions. "Class C" credit unions are those with the largest number of members, and merger trends in credit unions are skewing Class C credit union numbers.

CUNA will be sending out information to its membership about the topics the Renewal Review Committee is exploring to seek input from other credit unions.

When the trade association embarked on its Renewal project back in 1995 and 1996, it was agreed that a Renewal Review Committee would be appointed every five years for this purpose.
