DES MOINES, Iowa-During a visit with Iowa's CUs, representatives of Panama's credit unions expressed interest in learning more about advocacy and legislative efforts. The Panamanian delegation visited Iowa as part of the World Council of Credit Unions' (WOCCU) International Partnerships Program.
WOCCU noted that effective lobbying can be challenging in many Latin American countries, including Panama, since interactions with government officials are often seen as signs of corruption or under-the-table dealings.
The Panamanian CUs sought the Iowa league's advice on ways to keep legislative activities transparent and leverage member needs to positively influence legislation.
