Peru CUs Reaching Out To Rural, Working Poor Populace

LIMA, Peru - Credit unions in Peru rolled out a comprehensive program in 2006 with World Council of Credit Unions (WOCCU) to increase financial services access for the rural poor in that country. Executives from various credit unions and financial associations in the U.S. and Australia have visited to review the program's methodology and effect.

The National Federation of Peruvian Credit Unions (FENACREP) represents 163 credit union affiliates in Peru serving 614,000 members Consolidated credit union assets in the FENACREP system are approximately $628 million.

Participants include Laida Garcia, EVP with Florida Central Credit Union, Tampa; Adrian Lovney, CEO of Abacus-Australian Mutuals, an organization serving Australian credit unions and mutual building societies; Dave Klavitter, VP with CUNA; Dennis Tanimoto, president of the Hawaii league; Anne Cochran, president of the Louisiana league, and various WOCCU staff. Working with eight partner CUs, WOCCU is implementing a three-year program to increase access to financial services for Peru's rural poor.

Peru also recently hosted 177 attendees from nine countries at WOCCU's Latin American Members Forum. The two-day event convenes annually to provide education and networking opportunities for WOCCU's Latin American members. In addition, this year 29 participants also participated in advanced training classes through WOCCU's inaugural Managers Certification Program, which ran concurrently with the event.

WOCCU statistics show Latin America is a leader in worldwide growth, with credit union membership increasing by 185% over the past five years and consolidated assets growing by an impressive 530% during that time.
