Put Capital To Work

ONTARIO, Calif. - Credit unions frequently seek growth by looking to capture walletshare. And it's in that wallet, believes CO-OP Financial Services, where an underutilized opportunity lies: cards.

Both credit and debit cards are not only a potential growth opportunity, but they are a way to reach out and touch members on a daily basis, every time they reach into their wallets, CO-OP FS suggested.

Another key to growth: be where your members are. Most credit unions can't afford to build a branch on every corner, that's why CO-OP suggested credit unions optimize their network of locations by getting into shared branching, as well as a strong ATM network.

But it's not enough to offer credit and debit cards and join a shared branching network: you also have to let members know what all you have to offer. Putting together a consumer marketing program is a vital part of the growth equation, CO-OP said. (c) 2007 The Credit Union Journal and SourceMedia, Inc.
