- NORFOLK, Va. (08/27/02) A robbery gone badled a robber to kill himself in front of members and employees at abranch of Chartway FCU here, during which a Norfolk, Va. policeofficer was also shot. The police officer was rushed to surgery andis recovering. The robber, described as a young man of about 20 butnot immediately identified by police, was wounded in an initialexchange of gunfire with police when he tried to exit the buildingthrough a rear entrance; bullet holes could be seen in thebuilding's exterior. The robber entered the credit union carryingtwo bags and wearing a baseball cap, approached a teller, withdrewa handgun and fired. The gunfire was witnessed by a member in thedrive-through, and police arrived one minute after the 911 call wasmade. Before shooting himself, the robber was quoted by one memberinside the branch as saying, "I did this all for the money." Onemember, Norris Scott, 31, was initially mistaken by police for therobber. Scott claimed police threw him to the ground, handcuffedhim and left him in a police cruiser.
