Rosenthal informed Credit Union Journal of his new role after earlier announcing he was leaving the Federation after leading the organization for nearly 30 years.

Rosenthal will begin his new position at CFPB in Washington May 7.

Rosenthal, who was recognized for his contributions to the credit union community with a Herb Wegner Award, said the Federation has "traveled a long way" since the 1980s to become a nationally recognized and respected voice for low-income communities.

"The Federation is proud to count more than 200 credit unions in our membership, with total assets of some $13 billion and membership of 1.7 million. I can tell you that reaching these heights was beyond our wildest dreams back in the 1980s. This is the toughest job I've ever loved. Leaving is not easy."
