The Council approved a rezoning of the property that will allow 50,000 square feet of commercial development for the Durham Central Market, which will be the anchor tenant for the Kent Corner project.

A developer is currently building a new apartment complex in the neighborhood of the Self-Help project, which could combine retail space, offices and homes. The neighborhood links downtown Durham and Duke University, where business has struggled for decades.

The project is one of several undertaken by the $600 million community development credit union to help revitalize parts of downtown Durham and other North Carolina communities.
