Services Center Federal Credit Union taps insider as next CEO

Services Center Federal Credit Union in Yankton, S.D., has promoted April Tompkins to its new CEO.

Tompkins first came to the $70 million-asset institution nine years ago and has served as chief operating officer for the past three years, Services Center FCU said on Monday.

Philip Heinlen, the previous CEO for Services Center Federal Credit Union, led the credit union for approximately two and a half years before resigning in March, a spokesperson said.

Tompkins brings a “proven track record of leadership and strategic vision, critically important to continue Services Center FCU’s history of growth and exceptional member services,” the credit union said in a press release.

SCFCU said during her career with the credit union, it has grown to serve members in more than 18 counties in South Dakota and Nebraska. Officials said Tompkins has been “instrumental” in launching new technology and products.

“The board of directors is excited to promote April to this leadership role,” Stephan Anderson, chairman of Services Center FCU, said in the press release. “Her extensive experience with Services Center FCU and demonstrated success will be instrumental in continuing Services Center FCU’s commitment to the financial needs of our community.”

In 1962, five Yankton State Hospital employees organized and chartered what then was known as Yankton State Hospital Employees Federal Credit Union, which had 32 members and $1,306 in assets. Today, Services Center Federal Credit Union has three branches and more than 7,700 members.
