Free was 73 years old when he passed. He would have been 74 on Dec. 10.

The $22.7 million-asset credit union honored Free, who was a big Elvis Presley fan, with a picture on its website of Free wearing an Elvis t-shirt and standing between a gold jukebox and a life-sized Elvis stand-up poster.

"He was an avid Elvis fan," the website said. "We are sad 'our Elvis' has left the building."

According to the Cornerstone Credit Union League, Free was active in the Houston chapter of what then was known as the Texas CU League. At one time he served as chapter president.

After his retirement as president of Southern Star CU, Free was elected as a board member of Southern Star CU. He also served on the Town North Bank Board.
