Troubled Bank Branch Provides Opportunity For UW CU

MADISON, Wis. – University of Wisconsin CU on Monday will open its third branch in the Milwaukee area in Wauwatosa, in an almost-new building it bought from ailing Amcore Bank.

The branch, across from Mayfair Mall, contains about 14,000 square feet of space.

Amcore, based in Rockford, Ill., built the branch in 2006 while it was expanding in Wisconsin. Amcore, which now is under orders from regulators to improve its financial condition, has been selling branches to other institutions. Amcore lost $213 million in 2009.

It is $1.2 billion UW CU’s 17th branch.
