COLUMBUS, Ga. – Two men believed to have just robbed an MEA FCU branch here were killed this morning after a pursuing police officer fired into their getaway car and forced it to crash into a utility pole.
One suspect, believed to be the driver of the black pick-up truck used for the getaway, was reported dead at the scene, while a passenger thought to be his accomplice, died a short time later after being rushed to the hospital.
Police said the pursuing officer spotted one of the suspects running from the credit union at 11:30 a.m. today and called dispatch about a possible armed robbery at the credit union before beginning the chase. At some point the officer saw the suspect get in the black truck and ordered the driver the stop, at which point the driver tried to run him down. Then the officer fired several shots at the truck.
