United Community FCU Gets More Mileage From Traveling Billboards

WEST MIFFLIN, Penn. – United Community FCU has found a new way to profit from an employee benefit – the credit union has equipped 17 employees with a company car, wrapped bumper-to-bumper in a credit union advertisement.

The traveling billboards were created out of a desire to boost business at a time when the $38 million credit union is facing the pending closing of the General Motors Corp. metal stamping plant in West Mifflin. The credit union was founded in 1951 by GM workers and was called Auto Workers FCU until two years ago.

The traveling billboards contain phone numbers and information that people can use to send a text message on a cell phone to the credit union.

In return for the cars, the credit union asked each employee to pledge to drive it 10,000 miles per year around town for the next three years. The employees have to pay for gas, while the credit union retains ownership of the cars in case an employee quits.
