DENVER – Westerra CU, the credit union giant formed by combining three local credit unions, on Friday was approved for the broadest community charter in Colorado – covering more than 1.5 million people in Denver, Jefferson and Arapahoe counties.

The $930 million credit union currently serves a mixed field of membership including Denver public schools employees, employees of Safeway and a variety of area communities, as a result of 2005 and 2006 mergers of Denver Public Schools CU, Safeway Rocky Mountain Employees CU and Gateway CU.
The new community charter was approved by the state Financial Services Board after Friday’s public hearing.
