Why Charter Oak FCU Didn’t Wait For Traditional Planning Time

GROTON, Conn. - Not waiting for this year’s strategic planning session to address the road ahead, Charter Oak Federal Credit Union here discussed future objectives at its quarterly employee meeting.

The staff meetings are something new CEO Brian Orenstein initiated this year to bring his team of 180 closer together, boost morale, and share the credit union’s direction.

At the latest meeting Orenstein discussed areas in which employees can work harder to strengthen Charter Oak’s position in the coming year, and the credit union’s direction was shared, as well.

“They’ve been excellent events,” said Orenstein about the quarterly meetings. “We get business done and there is a social aspect.”

Every employee is invited and more than 160 attended this past meeting held at the local Groton Inn & Suites. “We have ten branches and this gives staff the opportunity to see people they haven’t worked with in quite some time,” Orenstein said.

Each meeting highlights employees who have excelled in customer service and driving business, and a “Team of the Quarter” award is handed out. Everyone who attended the latest meeting received a free gas card.

The meetings enhance staff productivity, setting goals for the next quarter, Orenstein explained. Longer-term, the $600-million Charter Oak is focused on branch expansion and driving growth in core products, like regular and business checking.

“We’ll be focused less on transactions and more on relationships,” Orenstein added.(c) 2008 The Credit Union Journal and SourceMedia, Inc. All Rights Reserved.http://www.cujournal.com http://www.sourcemedia.com
