Building off its goal to be an "employer of choice," South Carolina Federal Credit Union launched its "Blue Buddy" program this year. The "buddy" is this scenario is a tenured employee who befriends and looks out for a new hire.
"While primarily responsible for offering advice and guidance regarding the day-to-day aspects of working at South Carolina Federal, the buddy may also offer encouragement and knowledge resources as they help introduce the new employee to the credit union's culture," said SVP of Human Resources and Development Leslie Norris.
In an effort to emphasize its commitment to employee development and internal career goals, the CU focuses on "talent mobility" and "career management" strategies.
"High performing companies have highly tenured people," noted Norris. "Not only does this make the employee more skilled, it also is reflective in the organizational intelligence and intimately understanding how the organization works."
For new employees and those more senior, the CU offers transparent communication mediums with senior management. One such vehicle is "Woods Wire" that allows employees direct communication with CEO Scott Woods. "Scott receives, reads and responds to every letter he receives from employees," said Norris.
Feedback is also gained by a biannual "Internal Service Survey," which allows employees to provide and receive comments on their respective departments regarding internal member service.
"Management reviews the employee feedback and then creates action plans on ways to improve their overall performance and meet employee expectations," said Norris.
Founded in 1936, the CU currently operates 16 branches and serves more than 157,000 members.
