Woman Pretended To Be Dead Mom To Access Benefits

WASHINGTON – A D.C. woman admitted that she pretended to be her dead mother to withdraw more than $35,000 in federal retirement benefits from the mother’s NASA FCU account.

Yolanda Powers, 31, took the funds from the account using ATM withdrawals, check card transactions, checks and telephonic transfers from the account of her mother, Carol Powers, who died on April 1, 2008, by representing herself to be the mother. Prosecutors said they have tape recordings of five calls to the credit union in which Powers represented herself to her mother.

The mother had just retired from the U.S. Office of Personnel Management when she passed.
