MADISON, Wis.-Wisconsin's State Assembly has passed Senate Bill 356 (SB 356), which will allow credit unions to double their financial support for charitable and community organizations. SB 356 increases credit unions' charitable giving limit, set in 1971 at one half of 1%, to 1% of regular reserves. The bill was supported by the state league.

Staffer Running For House Seat

GOLDSBORO, N.C.-John Bell, manager of sales and business development at North Carolina Community FCU, Goldsboro, N.C., is running for a seat in the North Carolina House of Representatives. Bell has entered the 10th District Republican primary, which will take place in May. This is his first run for office.

Dupaco Joins Guv At Event

DUBUQUE, Iowa-Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad, joined by representatives of Dupaco Community Credit Union, took part in a recognition ceremony for the 2011 Iowa Small Business Persons of the Year by the U.S. Small Business Adminstration. Gina Blean and Kelly Heysinger, co-owners of Unified Therapy Services, obtained financing for their business from Dupaco.

NCUA Releases Audited Financials

ALEXANDRIA, Va.-NCUA has released 2011 audited financial reports for its four permanent funds. All four funds received unqualified or "clean" audit opinions, the agency said. Audited financials were released for the NCUSIF, the Central Liquidity Facility, the Community Development Revolving Loan Fund, and the Operating Fund. Regulators Take Over Pair of CUs

KENOSHA, Wis.-NCUA and state regulators have taken over AM Community CU, a troubled one-time $135 million credit union that serves Chrysler workers and the surrounding community. The agency will seek to restore the CU to health.

Separately, NCUA liquidated Philadelphia-based People for People CDCU. The $635,000 CU's assets and members have been assumed by TruMark Financial CU.

Maine's CUs Raise Record $446K

PORTLAND, Maine-At the "Thaw to End Hunger Celebration Event" here, the Maine Credit Unions' Campaign for Ending Hunger, was recognized for raising a record $446,929.56 during 2011, an increase of nearly $45,000 over 2010.

The Campaign has now raised more than $4 million since it was launched 22 years ago. A keynote address at the event was made by Ernest Thompson, who wrote the film "On Golden Pond."

Paper Examines Board Succession

MADISON, Wis.-CUNA has published a white paper that suggests credit unions do not have a reliable system for attracting the next generation of board members. The paper examines the demographics of community credit union board members, the issues that arise from the findings and strategies for successful board succession and retention.

Titled "Effective Credit Union Board Succession Planning" and commissioned by CUNA's Community Credit Union Committee, the paper evaluates the changing demographics of community credit union board members and notes that many boards struggle to reflect the growing diversity of their members, with women and minorities being underrepresented.

Connery Announces Retirement Plans

NEW YORK--United Nations FCU President/CEO Michael J. Connery, Jr. said he will retire from his position effective on Jan. 1, 2013. Connery, 67, has spent nearly 24 years at the helm, overseeing growth to $3.5-billion from $235 million.

Foundation Honors Former CEO

Hoefer Foundation, which will seek to provide funding for "personal financial assistance and coaching to help hard-working and financially prudent Dupaco members recover from unforeseen life events and to increase opportunity through education."

Cordray To Speak At GAC

WASHINGTON-New Consumer Financial Protection Bureau Director Richard Cordray will appear at CUNA's GAC on March 19 as part of an afternoon general session. American Idol star Taylor Hicks who will perform at the opening concert, sponsored by the CUNA Councils. GAC will take place March 18-22 at the Washington Convention Center.

Maple Hill To Merge Into Connexus

WAUSAU, Wis.-Members of the $11.3-million Maple Hill CU have agreed to merge into the $340-million Connexus CU. The merger is expected to be completed by the end of March.

MADISON, Wis.-CUNA has announced the speaker lineup for its Thought Leader sessions at the 2012 America's Credit Union Conference (ACUC), to be held June 17-20 in San Diego. Those speakers will include John Lass, who will speak to "Building the Credit Union of the Future"; Anna Liotta, who will speak to "What Makes the Generations Tick and What Ticks Them Off"; Dave Horsager, on "The Trust Edge: What Top Leaders Have and Eight Pillars to Build It Yourself," in addition to a panel examining the 2012 elections.

WILKES BARRE, Penn.-Carrie Wood, CEO of Timberland FCU, has been named as the first winner of the Pennsylvania CU Association's Paul E. Kanjorski Advocacy Scholarship. Wood was honored at a luncheon with former Congressman Kanjorski, PCUA staff, and members of the Awards Committee. The scholarship covers the expenses to attend the 2012 CUNA Governmental Affairs Conference in Washington, D.C. next month.
