CUNA Names New Vice President
WASHINGTON-Samuel "Sam" R. Whitfield, Jr. has been named by CUNA as its new VP-legislative affairs. A former staff member for Sen. Trent Lott (R-MS), in the senator's roles as both Senate majority leader and Republican leader, Whitfield was most recently a legislative representative with the National Association of Realtors, and also served in President George W. Bush's administration as a legislative analyst/public affairs specialist with the White House Office of National Drug Policy. Additionally, he served with the Coalition Provisional Authority in Baghdad, Iraq, as a press officer.
Texas Foundation Disperses $237K
FARMERS BRANCH, Texas-The Texas CU Foundation reported it dispersed more than $23,285 in grants throughout the state to support financial literacy initiatives, and professional development of staff and volunteers during 2011. Moreover, the Foundation said it was staying true to its mission, "Empowering People to Improve Their Financial Well Being," by paying out $73,400 in grants in the first quarter of 2012.
CUES Names Scholarship Winners
MADISON, Wis.-CUES has named the three scholarship winners for its 2012 CEO Institute program: H. Vance Vargo, CEO of Family First CU in Saginaw, Mich.; Tammy Williams, president of Best Advantage CU in Brillion, Wis.; and Paul Yang, president/CEO of Premier Community Credit Union in Stockton, Calif. 400 Earn, Renew CUCE Designation
MADISON, Wis.-CUNA reported that 400 people from 49 states earned or renewed their CUNA Credit Union Compliance Expert (CUCE) Certification in 2011. Certification and recertification will be available in 2012 through three CUNA Regulatory Compliance Schools. NCUA Introduces Locator App
ALEXANDRIA, Va.-NCUA has unveiled a new CU Locator app to help consumers find their nearest credit union. The app is available for Apple iPhones and Android phones. It can be downloaded at the iTunes store and Android sites.
NCUA's app shows the nearest credit union locations and ATMs on a map or in a list, and further includes a mapping function using Google maps that shows the consumers the shortest route to a location. The app also includes other basic info, including contact numbers and branch hours, and additional links to the agency's homepage and social media sites. Users can also subscribe to the agency's e-mail alert system, NCUA Express.
Gleason Retires After 20 Years
ENFIELD, Conn.-Kathleen Gleason, president of Enfield Community FCU, has retired after 20 years of service with the $23-million credit union.
Police Officers' CU Meeting Set

More Mergers Are Completed
ROANOKE, Va.-Carilion FCU has been absorbed via merger by Freedom First FCU. The former Carilion FCU facility will become a branch of FFFCU. Meanwhile, in Dothan Ala., Frederica CU and Five Star CU have completed their merger, with the latter the surviving charter. The combined institution will have approximately $225 million in assets.
In Baton Rouge, La., OLOL Regional FCU has agreed to be absorbed via merger by Campus FCU. The OLOLRFCU facility will become Campus' eighth branch, and the merger will boost CFCU's total assets to $461 million.
Camaro Being Given Away
HOUSTON-To mark its 75th anniversary, Shell FCU is giving away monthly cash prizes, three cash grand prizes and a 2012 Camaro. Monthly $1,075 will be awarded to an individual who closes an auto, home equity, signature or mortgage loan of $5,000, and $175 will be awarded each month to an individual who opens a new checking account with debit card, E-Statements and online banking. The monthly $1,075 loan winners will be eligible to win the the 2012 Camaro, and three runner-up prizes valued at $7,000, $5,000 and $2,000.

Michigan CU Pioneer Dies
DEARBORN, Mich.-Donald MacKinnon, Jr., who helped charter more than 100 credit unions and served as president of Dearborn FCU (now DFCU Financial), died Jan. 25 at the age of 93. MacKinnon is a member of the Credit Union Hall of Fame in Washington.

Biz Kid$ is the CU-funded public television series that teaches kids about money management and entrepreneurship. Each Biz Kid$ box set includes DVDs for each episode and a CD containing PDFs of the corresponding curriculum for each episode. SAN JOSE, Calif. - San Jose CU has turned 80 years old and is celebrating by giving away 80 prizes, including cash, movie tickets and other largesse.
Mondays through Thursdays, two winners will each receive two AMC Gold Experience tickets. On Fridays, one winner will win two movie tickets plus an additional prize of $80 cash. Members can enter the drawings through a form located on the credit union's website through April 26.
The $130-million credit union was chartered in 1932 as Municipal Employees' CU of San Jose with only four members. It ended its first fiscal year with $262 in deposits. The fourth charter member, Lawrence Campbell, a retired San Jose Firefighter Chief who turns 105 this April, recalls that the credit union was started by a handful of people to provide each other "good and handy service."
HOOVER, Ala.-The $158-million Mutual Savings Credit Union has launched a new brand campaign. The new brand, "You Can Do That," is aimed at answering questions consumers and members may have both about membership and various loan products.

WARMINSTER, Penn.-Readers of the Mnotgomeryville-Lansdale Patch voted Freedom Credit Union the "Best...Bank in Montgomeryville-Lansdale." FCU received 52% of the overall vote with 228 votes.
SOUTHFIELD, Mich.--Mortgage Center, LLC has named Thomas Teeple as its new president/CEO. Teeple was most recently CEO of Walker Jackson Mortgage Corp., Chantilly, Va., and hss held positions with Bank of America and other institutions. Mortgage Center is a CUSO that offers mortgage services.
SANTA CLARA, Calif.-Tim Kramer, long-time president of KeyPoint Credit Union, has had his contributions recognized with the credit union renaming its headquarters building in his honor. During Kramer's 26-year tenure as CEO, KeyPoint (formerly known as AEA Credit Union) has grown from about $60 million is assets to over $750 million in assets, among other accomplishments. Among those on hand for the dedication was Santa Clara Mayor Jamie Matthews, who thanked Kramer for his years of dedication to the Santa Clara community, stating under Kramer's leadership, KeyPoint has been helping schools, education, and other programs in the city.
