Tiny Virginia CU Is Shuttered
ALEXANDRIA, Va.-NCUA has shuttered tiny Shiloh of Alexandria FCU, the fifth CU failure of 2013. The $2.4-million credit union served just 624 members who were parishioners of Shiloh Baptist Church, just down the street from NCUA. NCUA closed the 20-year-old credit union after determining the credit union was insolvent and had no prospect for restoring viable operations.
Philadelphia FCU To Back Race
PHILADELPHIA-Philadelphia FCU has agreed to pay $50,000 to help sponsor the first the first Parx Casino Philly Cycling Classic on June 2, when cyclists from around the world will line up near the top of Lyceum Avenue, a steep street known to race fans as the Manayunk Wall, and run a 12-mile circle. The men's race will consist of 10 laps and the women's race will include five laps.
Members Well on Their Way

Room Named After Service CU
MANCHESTER, N.H.-America's Credit Union Museum renamed its third floor conference room the Service Credit Union Conference Center at a special dedication ceremony held at the Museum. Portsmouth, N.H.-based Service Credit Union has been a staunch supporter and one of the founding underwriters of the Museum with Service CU President and CEO Gordon Simmons serving as Chairman of the Museum Board of Directors from 2001 until 2012.
Biz Kid$ Wins Gold Award
MADISON, Wis.-Biz Kid$ has received a Parent's Choice Gold Award. Criteria for judgments include the highest production standards, universal human values and a unique, individual quality that's a "notch above." The award is presented by the Parents' Choice Foundation.
Santos To Head Wis. DFI
MADISON-The Wisconsin Department of Financial Institutions (DFI) has named Kim Santos to head the Office of Credit Unions, succeeding Ginger Larson, who is retiring in June after 17 years with the Office, including nine years as director.
More Retirements, CEOs Announced
PHILADELPHIA-Tom Swierzy, CEO of Sb1 FCU, said he will retire in mid-July. During his career Swierzy has seen growth to more than $600-million in assets. In Holyoke, Colo., Ron Goldenstein has retired as CEO of Holyoke Community FCU, after 28 years at the helm of the $32-million CU, overseeing growth from $4 million. In Honolulu, meanwhile, Wallace Watanabe has retired after 40 years of leading the now $745-million credit union. And in Winston-Salem, N.C., W.K. "Ike" Keener has retired after 38 years at Allegacy FCU, the last 16 as CEO. Cathy Pace has been named to succeed Keener. In Granite City, Ill., Keith Burton, EVP with GCS Credit Union, has been named to succeed Mark Holshouser as CEO (see story, page 16).

More Mergers Are Announced
NORTH CHICAGO, Ill.-The $525-million Great Lakes CU has acquired new branches in Naperville and Bolingbrook with the merger of the $114-million Hawthorne CU, an ailing, one-time $160-million credit union. In Apple Valley, Minn., $8.5-million Park Schools CU is being absorbed by $134-million United Educators. CU. In Chambersburg, Penn., Community of Healthcare Employees CU is being absorbed via merger by Patriot FCU.
Xplore Federal Is New Name
NEW ORLEANS--Shell New Orleans FCU has changed its name to Xplore Federal Credit Union. The name follows a move to a community charter in 2007. To mark the new name, Xplore offered gifts in its branches.
Entrust CEO, Adams, Dies at 59
RICHMOND, Va.-Entrust Financial CU's president, Susan Adams, has died after a battle with cancer at 59. Adams headed EFCU for 24 years and served on the boards of state and national groups.
