SAN DIMAS, Calif.-Operation Best Wishes, the annual holiday program sponsored by Defense Credit Union Council, Overland Studios and WesCorp, has been named a recipient of an Award or Distinction during the 14th Annual Communicator Awards. The annual competition honors the best in advertising, corporate communications, PR, and identity work for print, video, interactive, and audio, received more than 8,500 entries from companies and agencies of all sizes. All entries were judged by the International Academy of the Visual Arts.

Minnesota CUs Surpass $150K Goal
ST. PAUL, Minn.-Minnesota credit unions have surpassed their $150,000 fundraising goal to finance the building of a home for a severely injured Iraq war veteran through the Homes for Our Troops organization. Credit unions here and in Colorado have teamed up with Homes for Our Troops to build houses for injured vets in tandem with the Democratic and Republican national conventions.
Ruffin Announces Upcoming Retirement
WARNER ROBINS, Ga.-John Ruffin said he will retire as CEO of Robins FCU on Dec. 31 after a 37 year career in CUs. Ruffin joined RFCU in 1997 as EVP and was named CEO in 2003. Prior to that, Mr. Ruffin was with NCUA for 26 years, including as regional director in the Austin office. During his time at Robins FCU Mr. Ruffin has seen assets more than double to $1.1-billion. EVP John Rhea has been named to succeed Mr. Ruffin as CEO.
Iowa CUs Raise $460K For Disaster Relief
DES MOINES, Iowa-The Iowa CU Foundation has raised more than $460,000 for its flood disaster relief program. Nearly 900 CU members have received a $500 grant to help with immediate needs.
Drive For Hope Raises $80K For Cancer Center
MADISON, Wis.-The Drive for Hope 2008 raised a total donation of $80,000 for the University of Wisconsin Paul P. Carbone Comprehensive Cancer Center's "Creating Hope" Lung Cancer Campaign to provide facilities, researchers and support for lung cancer research. The Drive for Hope, organized by the Credit Union Executives Society (CUES), included the third-annual Drive for Hope golf tournament; the Celebrate Hope party at Capital Brewery, and the Drive for Hope Online Auction.
