Mission FCU Taps Schwarz As CEO

SAN DIEGO-The $1.8-billion Mission FCU has named Debra Schwarz as its new president and CEO after having served in that capacity on an interim basis since April of this year. Schwarz has more than 25 years experience in financial services, and previously held senior executive positions with First Future CU and San Diego County CU. Schwarz succeeds Ron Martin, who retired.

NY Gov. Signs SAMRT Bill

ALBANY, N.Y. -State-chartered credit unions will be exempt from a new recording tax that takes effect in 2010, as Gov. David Paterson signed the Special Additional Mortgage Recording Tax bill into law earlier this month. Federally chartered credit unions were already exempt from the new tax. "This pro-credit union legislation is a major victory for New York credit unions," said William J. Mellin, CEO of the Credit Union Association of New York. "This new law levels the playing field, and encourages credit unions to look closely at a state charter," added state senator Hugh Farley (R- Capital/Adirondack).

Dames Named Outstanding Exec

MADISON, Wis.-Gordon R. Dames, who will retire later this year as CEO of Mountain America Credit Union in West Jordan, Utah, has been named the 2008 CUES Outstanding Executive. Dames has served as CEO at MACU since 1991, and from 1983 to 1991 was the CEO of San Diego County Credit Union. The award wil be presented Nov. 2 during CUES CEO NEtwork in Las Vegas.

Florida CU Helping Flood Victims

MIRAMAR, Fla.-After a food shortage struck the poor island nation of Haiti earlier this year, Eastern Financial Florida Credit Union launched a month-long campaign in May to aid the starving populace. Now in the wake of multiple hurricane strikes that have left nearly the entire country underwater, Eastern Financial Florida is starting a new campaign, "Help Haiti-Again." For the next two months, each of the $2-billion credit union's 22 branches will collect donations for "Food For The Poor." The average Haitian family can eat for just $12 per month, so monetary donations are encouraged in increments of $12.
