Astute Employee Nabs Scammer

LAS VEGAS-A WestStar CU employee prevented what could have been a $47,000 case of identity theft.

Centralized Lending Officer Barbara Crowley, who was honored as the CU's 2006 Employee of the Year, noticed the phone number on an auto loan application sent in from a Reno dealership through the CU Direct Lending Program, didn't match the phone number of the TransUnion credit report. Upon following up with a phone call to the number on the credit report, Crowley learned the woman was the victim of ID theft. A friend of the victim's roommate had stolen her computer, bank statements, account numbers, Social Security Number and driver's license. Crowley's actions eventually led to the arrest of the suspect.
