RIVERDALE, Ill. – A 23-year-old woman, part of a self-described “Bonnie and Clyde” duo, on Friday was found guilty by a federal jury of the Jan. 19, 2006, armed robbery of more than $250,000 from Acme Continental CU.
Asia Hill, who told tellers that day, “if you push any buttons, I’ll shoot you,” sobbed into her lawyer's shoulder as a federal jury found her guilty of aggravated bank robbery following a two-week trial.
Hill was identified as the assailant who leaped a counter with a handgun and later bragged that she and her boyfriend had pulled off their crime “like Bonnie and Clyde.”
She was convicted largely on the testimony of her boyfriend and accomplice, Charles Anderson, 28, who pleaded guilty to charges in the case earlier. Anderson’s testimony was corroborated by another witness who had backed out of the holdup at the last minute, as well as a friend who saw Hill with a new car and mink coat handing out $100 bills in the days after the heist.
The two heavily armed bandits – Anderson had a sawed-off shotgun – planned the heist that day because Hill had inside information that the credit union had received a large amount of cash for paychecks.
First they rifled through the teller drawers, then Anderson forced one of the employees to open the vault, which they emptied, too. They made off with a total of $251,597, before escaping in a Hyundai they stole from one of the tellers.
