Marilyn Marra-Crolick, CEO of FocalPoint FCU, Syracuse N.Y., stands under the entrance to the credit union at Enterprise America during her tour of the simulated city at WCNY Television. Enterprise America includes a credit union as part of the simulated city designed to educate students about a variety of life skills. According to WCNY, Enterprise America is a 10,000-square-foot area education center that provides a hands-on program for middle and high school students who will learn how to be entrepreneurs in a simulated city. Children learn dozens of business and civic concepts, explore careers based in STEM (science technology, engineering and math) and prepare to become tomorrow's workforce. It is modeled on a proven program that started in Kansas City and is available in only a few cities in the United States. The center and its programs are available to 3,000 schools within a two-hour radius of Syracuse N.Y. It has a potential reach of 700,000 students in grades five through nine.
Two R.I.A. FCU employees, Lisa and Erin, help redo landscaping for the local YMCA as part of the CU's participation in the United Way Day of Caring. Such community service is often just another part of a day in the life of many credit unions.
