UVA Community CU, Charlottesville, Va., donated a box set of Biz Kid$ DVDs to the University of Virginia Children's Hospital.
Oregon Community CU, Eugene, Ore., celebrated National Credit Union Youth Week with a number of events, including its Downtown branch inviting a Girl Scout Troop into the branch after hours for a personal tour. Employees from the Coburg and Mohawk branches visited Twin Rivers Dos Rios and Mt. Vernon elementary schools to teach classes about the importance of saving.
Windsor Locks FCU, Windsor Locks, Conn., held a toy drive to benefit Connecticut Children's Medical Center throughout the month of April. The idea was to get kids involved, in conjunction with National Credit Union Youth Week. Members and employees filled seven large grocery bags.
The Minnesota Credit Unions for Kids and Minnesota Family Involvement Council committees of the Minnesota Credit Union Foundation recently honored two members for outstanding service: Dave Engler, manager of investment services at Hiway FCU, was MnCU4Kids Volunteer of the Year, while Missy Anderson Mound, VP and Chief Operating Officer at General Mills FCU, received the Family Involvement Council's Outstanding Volunteer Award.
Texas Trust CU, Mansfield, Texas, said its Spirit Debit Reward program has generated $520,213 for local schools from August 2011 through March 2014. Each participating school has a custom-designed debit card, and they receive 15 cents each time their school's Spirit Debit Reward card is used. Separately, the Texas Trust Youth Advisory Council held a car wash that raised $700 for the Arlington Fire Department's Random Acts of Kindness charity.
BrightStar CU, Sunrise, Fla., continues to expand its presence in Broward County by opening a new branch in Pompano Beach. With 2,700 square feet, the Pompano Beach location at 1600 South Federal Highway is its seventh location in Broward. Amenities include extended evening hours, a drive-thru and ATM.
Signal Financial FCU sponsored a paper shredding event at its headquarters in Kensington, Md., in conjunction with Earth Week. During the event 6,120 lbs. of paper was shredded, along with 24 hard drives. Also, some 224 lbs. of cardboard was recycled, and 2,878 lbs. of digital media (copiers, phones, audio equipment, cable boxes, modems, CDs, floppies and more) was shredded or recycled.
American Heritage FCU, Philadelphia, awarded $1,000 college scholarships to 21 of its young credit union members. In addition, AHFCU hosted a fundraiser for Congressman Mike Fitzpatrick (R-8) that included credit union leaders from TruMark Financial CU, Citadel FCU, and Freedom CU.
Consumers CU, Kalamazoo, Mich., was honored by Communities in Schools of Kalamazoo with a 2014 Champs Award, which recognizes the contributions of those in the community who work to support children in Kalamazoo Public Schools, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life.
Earlier this year Edge FCU, Liverpool, N.Y., collected towels for the United Way of CNY. Edge FCU has been named one of Central New York' Best Places to Work in the 5-50 employees category by The Business Journal News Network and BizEventz.
Consumers CU, Waukegan, Ill., donated $1,000 in support of People Lending Assistance Network (PLAN), a not-for-profit organization that provides food, clothing, appliances, education and job assistance to both individuals and families in the central Lake County area.
Shaneque Green was greeted at the doors of her workplace by representatives of Neighborhood CU, Coppell, Texas, with a $10,000 oversized check with her name on it. Green's name had been drawn from the ranks of the CU's Prize Savings Account holders for demonstrating commendable saving habits.
St. Helens Community CU, St. Helens, Ore., celebrated National Teacher Appreciation Day by handing out more than 700 cookies to Columbia County teachers.
Scott CU, Edwardsville, Ill., signed on with the March of Dimes to be the presenting sponsor for this year's Metro East March for Babies walk and Bikers for Babies ride. Scott CU chief marketing officer Adam Koishor presented a check for $10,000 to the March of Dimes Greater Missouri Chapter Senior Community Director Shannon Sims and March of Dimes State Director Susan Bushnell.
St. Anne's CU, Fall River, Mass., held a "Casual Day for a Cause" that raised nearly $300 for Forever Paws Animal Shelter, a non-profit, no kill shelter.
Security Service Federal Credit Union was recognized with a 2014 Innovation Award for Effective E-learning in Small and Medium Enterprises from Skillsoft.

In its 15th year of fundraising for Children's Hospital Boston through the Boston Marathon, Hanscom FCU, Hanscom AFB, Mass., provided the customized Top End OSR racing chair used by Andy Martin, Jr., a former patient. Hanscom FCU raised $31,000 for the hospital. In addition, the CU hosted an event for the financial literacy program CU4 Reality at Hanscom AFB, and it contributed 3,607 books to the Massachusetts CU League's statewide book drive. Finally, a volunteer group of Hanscom FCU staff, family and members visited Fisher House Boston and prepared a meal for families of veterans being treated in the Veterans Affairs Boston Healthcare System. Hanscom FCU recently celebrated a major milestone with its 60th annual meeting. The CU awarded $12,000 in scholarships, with $1,500 awards going to six members beginning their college careers and two from a pair of local Air Force Junior ROTC units.
Ocala Community CU, Ocala, Fla., took business continuity/disaster recovery training to a new level when Jackie Rojas, director, joined the OCCU Staff in participating in live fire extinguisher training.
Dutch Point CU, Newington, Conn., hosted its annual Shred Day for residents of the local community, who shredded some 6,700 pounds of unwanted documents.
America's Christian CU held its 56th annual meeting at its headquarters in Glendora, Calif. There was a special dedication to Board of Directors Secretary, Reverend Ridge Ireland, who passed away at the conclusion of 2013. Barbara Ireland, wife to Ridge Ireland, was presented with a bouquet of flowers and a plaque dedicating the CU's patio to Rev. Ireland.
FORUM CU, Indianapolis, placed third among large companies on the Indiana Chamber of Commerce's "Best Places to Work" list for 2014.
For a team building event PSCU built and then donated 12 bicycles. PSCU and the credit unions in the Louisiana area worked with the Boys & Girls Club of New Orleans to select 12 deserving boys and girls ages 8 to 12 to be the proud new owners of the black and pink bikes.
Belco Community CU, Harrisburg, Pa., held a groundbreaking ceremony on the future site of its new branch in Hanover. Construction began in April on the 3,290-square-foot facility, which is scheduled to open fall 2014 near the new Target plaza.
