Northern Piedmont FCU, Warrenton, Va., celebrated National Credit Union Youth Week with contests and prizes for Teen & Kids Klub members. Staff took part in the celebration and dressed to "Catch The Save Wave!"
Team members at Arrowhead CU, San Bernardino, Calif., donated hundreds of lightly-used toys to Steven's Hope for Children. The toys in the best condition will be used in the Housing for Hope project, which provides a home for families with children undergoing extended treatment at Loma Linda Children's Hospital.
Credit Union ONE, Ferndale, Mich., broke ground on its new, 4,800-square-foot branch in Traverse City. Mayor Michael Estes, along with Credit Union ONE Branch Manager Tamara DePonio, Board Member Gail Westover, and President and CEO Gary Moody, performed a ceremonial dig.
Suffolk FCU, Medford, N.Y., and its members contributed $15,000 to Stony Brook Children's Hospital, which offers comprehensive care for childhood illnesses.
The Minnesota Credit Union Network (MnCUN) honored two credit union advocates with its most prestigious awards Outstanding Credit Union Volunteer of the Year and Outstanding Credit Union Professional of the Year. Leonard Luoma, who has served as board chair of Hermantown FCU for 41 years, took the Volunteer award, while Barbara Brown, president & CEO of Northwoods CU, took the latter award.
In celebration of Financial Literacy Month, the Minnesota CU Foundation donated to Gillette Children's Specialty Healthcare two DVD box sets of the Biz Kid$ financial education program.
Courtney Van De Velde, member of Hiway FCU, St. Paul, Minn., was the recipient of a MN Family Involvement Council Scholarship Award.
TruMark Financial CU, Trevose, Pa., awarded more than $11,000 in scholarships at its seventh annual Financial Jeopardy Game. Grand prize winner Parth Patel, of Bensalem HS, prevailed over eight other contestants to win a $5,000 scholarship.
Cooperative Center FCU, Berkeley, Calif., provided free tax preparation services throughout the 2014 tax season to families with an annual household income of less than $51,000. The CU has offered these free services since becoming a Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) site in 2009.
eCO Credit Union, Birmingham, Ala., worked with three families the Dodds, the Morgans and the Voudries to improve their financial pictures through the eCO Savings Race. The Dodds were selected as the winners and received $10,000. The other participants, along with an improved financial picture, received $2,000. In total, Savings Race participants improved their financial pictures by more than $75,000 bringing the improvement from the past two Savings Races to almost $120,000.
Public Service CU, Romulus, Mich., is posing a challenge to community members this year: save $500,000 in loan interest and help local charities. To help raise awareness of the local charities involved, PSCU hosted an open house event that featured a shredding truck, pets from the Romulus/Brownstown Animal Shelter, fun inflatables, giveaways, games and information on the charities.
Montana 1st CU, Missoula, Mont., surprised two local high school teachers with supplies through the CU's Class Cash program. One teacher requested Class Cash funds to purchase a much-needed map of Latin America for his Spanish Class, while the other teacher asked for chef jackets for her culinary art students.
The Yankton Homeless Shelter was selected as the Members' Choice 2014 1st Quarter Charity for Services Center CU, Yankton, S.D. At the April board meeting, Donald Fiedler, chairman of the board, presented a check in the amount of $2,727.29.
America's First Federal CU, Birmingham, Ala., unveiled its 2014 First Class Student Scholarship Awards. The recipients are Laken Patterson of Thorsby High School, Timothy Guice of Cherokee County High School, and Sydney Estill of Spain Park High School, who each received a $5,000 scholarship to the school of their choice.
First Choice America Community FCU, Strip Steel Community FCU and Tin Mill Employees FCU, members of the Weirton-Wellsburg Chapter of Credit Unions in West Virginia, made a donation to the Wounded Warrior Project on behalf of the Weir Sr. High Class of 1978.
Nearly 200 Roseville (Calif.) High School seniors participated in "Bite of Reality," an interactive financial simulation aimed at teaching them how to manage money in real-world scenarios. Five credit unionsGolden 1, Patelco, SAFE, Schools Financial and First U.S. Communitystaffed the event with 30 volunteers.
Municipal CU, New York City, initiated the "Build A Better Schools" contest, a public sector-private sector partnership program the CU is doing in conjunction with the NYC Department of Education, the United Federation of Teachers, the Council of School Supervisors and Administrators, CUNY, and local media partners WPIX-TV 11 and the Daily News.
TDECU Mortgage-Victoria (Texas) supported its local soccer team, the Victoria Heat Girls U11, with the donation of a 10x10 pop-up tent. In addition, the TDECU branch in Lake Jackson hosted a blood drive in April to benefit the Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center. Twenty-two TDECU employees donated 25 pints of blood.
360 FCU, based in Windsor Locks, Conn., collected 8,105.8 pounds of outdated electronics (more than 3.6 tons) to be recycled.
Scott CU, Edwardsville, Ill., presented a $96,000 check to the American Cancer Society. The money represented $10,000 in Relay and Strides sponsorships and $86,000 from its Mardi Gras Ball Event. In addition, the CU donated $13,000 to the YMCA of Southwest Illinois to continue its sponsorship of the organization's Partner with Youth Campaign, Y Cup Race Series, Backpack Attack, Healthy Kids Day, annual golf tournament, Splash Aquatics Safety Day, Jefferson Street Community Center in O'Fallon and Operation Kid Comfort.
UNITED SA FCU, San Antonio, awarded $1,000 scholarships to four outstanding high school seniors: Ariana Borzotra, Earl Warren HS; Andrew Ivone, Louis D. Brandeis HS; Mitchell Martinez, Southwest HS; and, Shyanne Tallant, Communication Arts HS.

St. Anne's CU employees helped out at the Sacred Heart Parish food pantry and soup kitchen in Fall River, Mass., assisting in the food pantry by sorting food items and helping to distribute them when the pantry opened, and then helping serve 180 people nearly 250 meals.
As part of its Greater Good program, employees of Riverdale, Utah based America First CU's Southern Nevada branches participated in the Dynamo Day Clean Up event in Downtown Las Vegas, painting fire hydrants and fire lanes, picking up trash, covering graffiti and cleaning alleyways.
