With LeBron James, President George W. Bush and millions of others getting in on the "Ice Bucket Challenge" to raise money and awareness for ALS, credit unions couldn't be far behind. CUs nationwide have embraced the late-summer fad. Here are just a few examples of CUs around the country finding new ways of people helping people.

Mid-Hudson Valley FCU, Kingston, N.Y., raised more than $800, including corporate and employee donations of more than $300, along with MHV donating an additional $1 for each share of the Ice Bucket Challenge video (up to $500). The video was posted on the CU's Facebook page on August 19, and viewed more than 1,500 times and shared 640 times in less than 24 hours.

Vermont FCU, South Burlington, Vt., took part in the "Ice Bucket Challenge" by challenging its entire staff to take part in the fad sweeping the globe. The CU said in a statement that it participated in the challenge in memory of former board vice chairman Gilbert Tabor, who passed away from ALS in 2011. Vermont Federal challenged three other CUs in New England to participate and donated $10 for each VFCU staff member who participated, raising more than $500 for its local ALS chapter.

Staff at Beacon FCU, La Porte, Texas, raised $500 for ALS by participating in the "Ice Bucket Challenge."

More than a dozen staffers from Mazuma CU, Kansas City, Mo., were doused with ice water to benefit ALS, with each participant donating $10 to the cause.

CUNA's interim President and CEO, Bill Hampel, donated to the ALS campaign but took the Ice Bucket Challenge anyway, challenging Camden Fine, president and CEO of the Independent Community Bankers Association of America to take the challenge as well.

Pete Bagazinski, CEO at Catholic Vantage Financial FCU, Plymouth, Mich., took the Ice Bucket Challenge and challenged CEOs at other Catholic credit unions throughout the state to take the challenge to raise money for ALS.

Not content with a simple bucket of ice water, the CEO and board at Southern Mass CU, Fairhaven, Mass., were doused with a bulldozer bucket dump bucket full of water. The CU participated in the challenge in honor of CEO Daniel Waltz's father, who died from ALS in 1988 at age 54. The CU, its board and CEO have said they will all be making donations to support ALS research.

Belvoir FCU, Woodbridge, Va., offered a unique take on the “Ice Bucket Challenge,” pouring 1,000 $1 dollar bills on employees and then donating the $1,000 to ALS rather than pouring ice water on themselves.

John Carlson, CEO at Highmark CU, Rapid City, S.D., took the Ice Bucket Challenge and dared other local credit unions to do the same. The credit union is asking members and the community at large to stop into its branches to make donations to the ALS cause. It hopes to raise $1,000 for ALS.
