Credit unions across the country are marking Veterans Day in a variety of ways. In tribute to those who serve and the credit unions who serve them, Credit Union Journal offers a glimpse of some of the ways this special holiday is being observed.

Park View FCU, Harrisburg, Va., is paying tribute to those who serve by participating in a special day of service on Veterans Day. With the CU closed for the day, employees will be volunteering at Gift & Thrift, Our Community Place, Harrisonburg-Rockingham Free Clinic, Highland Retreat, Family Life Resource Center, Eastern Mennonite School, First Step, Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community, Tried and True, Community Preschool and Patchwork Pantry. This is the second year the CU's employees are doing community service on Veterans Day, and this year Park View decided to grow on the success of last year's effort be inviting other local businesses to join with them.

"We're looking forward to serving together alongside some of our members this year," said John Beiler, President and CEO. "We hope that our Community Connection continues to expand, with more employees from member businesses participating each year."

NAFCU is calling attention to HR 5061, a bill introduced by House Veterans Affairs Chairman Jeff Miller, which would exempt loans to veterans from the member business lending cap. NAFCU said the proposed legislation would also encourage outreach to service members and veterans to make them aware of the benefits available to them at credit unions.

Thirteen Worcester, Mass.-area credit unions banded together to sponsor Veterans Inc.'s Biennial Gala Military Ball, which raised more than $200,000 to support the agency that provides support services to veterans and their families. Though the gala event was held late last month at the Historical Armory in Worcester, the fundraising results were released just in time for Veterans Day. Participating credit unions included AllCom CU, Central One FCU, Digital FCU, GFA FCU, Grafton Suburban CU, Liberty Bay CU, Millbury FCU, Southbridge CU, St. Mary's CU, Webster First FCU, Worcester CU, Workers' Worcester Fire Department CU, the MA Credit Union Share Insurance Corporation and the Massachusetts CU League.

Widget FCU, Erie, Pa., is holding its inaugural Widget GIVES Back Community Day of Service in honor of Veterans Day. Employees will be making donations and volunteering their time toward eight different charitable initiatives. Among the special events ongoing: a "reality fair" financial literacy event for some 400 local high school students, packing boxes of food donations at Second Harvest Food Bank of Erie, unloading truces and working with Habitat for Humanity, putting on a special ceremony at the Pennsylvania Soldiers and Sailors Home, Packing bags for Make A Wish, assembling bikes for Community Shelter Services, making cards to be sent to soldiers and fundraising on behalf of United Way. GIVES is the CU's employee-directed charitable fund, Geared to Improve, Volunteer, Enrich and Serve.
