While 2024 was a tough overall year for lending, banks that were able to pull in stronger loan growth than their peers reaped the benefits.
Banks that posted stronger borrowing last year pulled to the top of American Banker's 2025 list of top-performing banks with between $10 billion and $50 billion of assets. The banks are ranked by the consulting firm Capital Performance Group based on their three-year average return on average equity, or ROAE, according to data from year-end 2024.
Claude Hanley, a founder and partner of Capital Performance Group, told American Banker that "good old-fashioned loan growth" is what helped the top-10 banks' bottom lines expand, while the median net income across the $10 billion-$50 billion tier declined.
The banks' profitability metrics weren't as strong as they were in 2023, but the top-performing companies still saw a median return on average equity of $15.32%, significantly higher than the 7.71% reported by all peers.
"Profitability shrunk for both top performers and all banks in the tier, but [top performers] did much better," Hanley said. "And how did they do that? ... The thing that jumps out at me is the top performers grew revenue. … So how did the top performers grow revenue? The driver was loan growth."
Median loan growth among the top-performing banks hit 5.67%, compared with 2.63% across 83 banks in the asset group. The top performers reported median revenue growth of 3.15%, compared with 0.71% among all peers.
Similar to banks in smaller asset groups, maintaining a cheaper cost of funds also helped banks outperform. However, banks with more than $10 billion of assets didn't grow their core deposits as much as smaller institutions.

Within the $10 billion-$50 billion category, size didn't play a huge role in a bank's financial performance. The median size for the top banks was just over $18 billion of assets, about the median size of banks throughout the tier.
Capital Performance Group compiled its report using data provided by S&P Global Market Intelligence, based on filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission and other regulators.
