American Century Investments of Kansas City, Mo., hired Joseph P. Craven as a senior vice president of its institutional business.

Mr. Craven, 49, was a principal for Aquiline Investments, a private-equity arm of Aquiline Holdings LLC. Before that he had been Putnam Investments' director of institutional retirement services. Earlier he had been the general counsel for the Massachusetts Office of the State Treasurer.
American Century, which announced the hiring Tuesday, had $94 billion of assets under management at yearend.
